“Tokyo, Mar 11 (IBNS) A surging wall of water swept away cars, sea vessels and buildings in northern Japan and devoured whatever came on its way while fires raged in oil installations and people ran out in panic as an earthquake of 8.9-magnitude rocked the Pacific nation early Friday, triggering a tsunami.
It is Japan’s biggest quake in the past 140 years, reports said, since it crossed the 7.9 registered in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake in Tokyo that killed more than 140,000 people.

Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan said there has been no radiation from the nuclear plants as feared and the units were shut down.

But a Kyodo report quoting industry minister said the operator of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant reported an abnormality after the quake that also affected the Fukushima Prefecture.

Reports said only six deaths were confirmed, but the devastation was massive in the quake and the 13-foot tsunami that it triggered in the northeast coast of Japan.

Japan’s JiJI press put the toll at 10, while a BBC report said it could be 19.

But these are preliminary reports and the toll is likely to rise.

There has been a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific basin, reports said.

About 20 people were injured in Tokyo after the roof of a hall collapsed on to a graduation ceremony, said the BBC.

In Tokyo, the people rushed out of the buildings during the tremor.

Footage showed the rooms inside offices shaking and people rushing in panic.

The quake occurred 400 km from Tokyo.

Cars and ships were swept away along with dwellings in tsunami in the Fukushima Prefecture, a prefecture (subnational jurisdiction in Japan) located in the T?hoku region on the island of Honsh?, TV footage showed.

Vast swathes of coastal farmland near the city of Sendai was engulfed by the tsunami waters which devoured houses, vehicles and carried with it the flames and debris of devastation.

The quake also triggered several infernos, including in an oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, said BBC.

PM Naoto Kan said, ”Parts of nuclear plants were automatically shut down but we haven’t confirmed any effects induced by radioactive materials outside the facilities.”

Tsunami warning has been issued for Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Russia, Hawaii, New Zealand and other nations.”
